The Sewing Labs teaches the legacy of sewing toward employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.
Our mission: : “To inspire hope in populations of women marginalized by generational poverty, addiction, incarceration, immigration or other life-challenges, through job skills training in the creative sewing arts, and networking.”
We focus on individual who find themselves in at-risk situations, however we welcome everyone.
The Sewing Labs understands that sewing is a universal language - it is the great equalizer, and community forms around sewing activities.
The past several months with Covid, we mobilized our community of teachers, students and volunteers to be making re-useable fabric masks for front line responders and the community. To date we have sewn and delivered over 58,000 masks. There is now a re-surgance and re-newed interest in sewing. We believe, through our partnerships and connections to companies in and around Kansas City who are hiring trained sewists, we can help get people back to work through our training programs.
We believe in up-cycling and are huge proponents of slow fashion. Recycle, re-use and reduce just make sense in a sewing world. We believe in mindful mending to reduce fashion waste and often hold classes and workshops based around the Three-R's. We are partnered with The Climate Council of Greater Kansas City to support these efforts.
